Şarkının çıkacağına dair hiçbir tanıtım ya da duyuru yapılmadı. Şarkı bir anda internet üzerinden yayımlandı ve Beyoncé’nin en son yayımladığı stüdyo albümü Beyoncé gibi promosyon olmadan büyük bir sürprizle dinleyiciye sunuldu. “Formation” Beyoncé’nin 50. Super Bowl performansından önceki gün yayımlandı.
“Formation”‘ın müzik videosu Melina Matsoukas tarafından çekildi ve 6 Şubat 2016’da Beyoncé’nin YouTube kanalına yüklendi. Müzik videosu 2015 yılının Aralık ayında New Orleans‘ta çekildi. Vulture.com’dan Greg Cwik şarkının “Sürtük, geri döndüm” diye başladığını ve Beyoncé ve dansçılarının boş bir havuzun içinde, sokaklarda dans edip “İstediğimi alırım, ben dünya starıyım” diye devam ettiğini yazıp “Evet, kesinlikle öyle,” diye ekledi.

Ardından Abteen Bagheri ve Chris Black’in That B.E.A.T. adlı belgeselin yayın haklarını Sundance adlı şirkete sattıkları için kendilerinden izin alınmaması gerektiği ortaya çıktı.
